2025 marks a major milestone for Cape Bag Group, 90 years of proudly serving South Africa’s industries with quality packaging, manufacturing, and property solutions.
What started back in 1935 as a small, family-run business repairing and selling hessian sacks from Cape Town harbour has grown into a multi-division group with over 300 employees and more than 800 product lines. Today, the Cape Bag Group includes four core businesses:
-
Cape Bag – Packaging distribution
-
Cape Bulk Bags – Industrial bulk bag solutions
-
Cape Twines & Packaging – Twines, ropes, and packaging manufacturing
Together, these businesses support key sectors such as agriculture, mining, chemicals, milling, fishing, and retail.
A Legacy Built on Consistency and Innovation
Under the leadership of Group MD Rob Uys, Cape Bag Group has evolved into a vertically integrated operation. This strategic move gave the group more control, speed, and room to innovate.
“We’ve always stayed close to our customers,” says Uys. “We listen. We adapt. And we keep moving forward.”
Over the years, the group has reinvested heavily in manufacturing, technology, and infrastructure, while also building a robust international sourcing network. An integrated administration platform ties everything together, allowing the business to remain agile in a fast-moving market.
Powered by People
What truly sets Cape Bag Group apart isn’t just product quality or smart systems it’s the people.
More than 25 employees have been with the company for over 20 years, with Paul Alperstein, Sales Director at Cape Twines & Packaging, currently in his 43rd year. This kind of loyalty speaks to a deeply embedded culture of trust, respect, and empowerment.
To celebrate the 90-year milestone, the company hosted internal events across all locations to recognise and thank every team member. “This business doesn’t run without them,” Uys adds.
Looking Ahead
The next chapter for Cape Bag Group includes continued investment in people, products, and properties. Elshamar is expanding its property portfolio, and manufacturing operations across the group are being upgraded to meet growing demand.
“We’re proud of our past,” says Uys. “But we’re even more excited about our future. Cape Bag Group is 90 years young and we’re just getting started.”
With a proven track record and a mindset focused on long-term sustainability, Cape Bag Group remains a trusted partner to thousands of businesses across the country.
